Course Qualifications and Requirements to be a Park Ranger 

Acceptance into the program is granted by the PRTP director after completion of a written application, personal or phone interview, medical examination, and payment of applicable program fees.  Completion of the program is a prerequisite for seasonal law enforcement positions with the National Park Service. 

Qualification requirements for the PRTP and for seasonal law enforcement park ranger positions include the following:

Students must be at least 21 years of age, by the time of PRTP course completion.

Students must be a U.S. citizen.

bullet

Students must possess a valid state driver's license.

bullet

Students must have a clear criminal history and pass a background investigation. (No felony convictions or serious misdemeanors including, but not limited to, drug, domestic violence or firearms violations.)

Students must be in good physical condition and be able to pass the five components of the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB)—body fat composition, flexibility, agility run, bench press, and 1.5 mile run—at the 25th percentile for their gender and age.  Standards can be found at http://www.fletc.gov/training/programs/physical-techniques-division/requirement-documents/peb-spec-pages?searchterm=peb+spec

 Students must meet the U.S. Department of the Interior/National Park Service Medical Standards (link to http://www.anpr.org/medical.pdf)

Students must be able to pass a drug screening test.

Students should consider additional training in emergency medical services, structural and wildland fire, search and rescue, and other emergency services disciplines to enhance their abilities and to be more competitive for park ranger positions.
