PES 100 Section #2693 Credit Hours: 1
MWF 11:00 – 12:00
INSTRUCTOR: Kathy Dodd
EMAIL: utahtxag@yahoo.com PHONE: (435) 590-6631
PURPOSE:
This is an activity class and you will be graded on your attendance, participation and improvement on the PEB from your first to second time to take it. If you have questions concerning the development of a workout program, equipment operation or lifting/spotting techniques please see your instructor for assistance. Remember that you will only get out of this class what you are willing to put into it. Work out as if your life depends on it – it may somewhere down the line.
OBJECTIVES:
To achieve improvement on the PEB scores through the design and implementation of a fitness program using basic training and nutritional principles, to develop realistic personal fitness goals and to provide the knowledge for students to be able to continue to maintain and improve their fitness levels after the course.
REQUIREMENTS:
Participation Statement - The course you have elected to participate in has a certain assumption of risk which you engender when you participate in activity classes such as these. You must be aware of this assumption. Additionally, the University does not provide medical coverage to students injured while participating in university-related activities or academic programs (e.g. field trips, internship programs, science/art labs, band, theatrical performances, physical education activities, club/organization functions). Students are encouraged to obtain insurance prior to participation.
Roster – Double check your schedule to be sure you are in the right class. If your name does not appear on the class roster, you will not be permitted to work out during this specified class time.
Uniform – You will be required to wear your class t-shirt, shorts or sweats and gym shoes for every class.
Forms – You must turn in a health history form before you can participate in this class. The forms are due on January 19.
Attendance – You will be allowed a maximum of zero absences to receive a passing grade in this class. You are responsible for signing in to verify your attendance for each class session. Tardies or absences will require a written report be turned in to the PRTP director and that any class work be made up. You may not sign in for anyone else – this is academic dishonesty which may result in a failing grade and may be reported to the dean’s office and/or Student Life office for review.
Fitness Assessment – Your fitness assessment will be the PEB. Improvement on this assessment from the first test to the last test will be the mean for measuring your progress for the semester. The PEB assessments will be held as follows: January 23 (1st test); April 18 (final test).
Mini-lectures – 5 minute lectures on various topics associated with establishing a good workout program will be given periodically at the beginning of class. Topics covered will be related to fitness, nutrition and weight lifting.
Reflection Paper – You will be required to develop a reflection paper near the end of the semester evaluating your progress and your ability to meet your goals. You must also develop new goals now that the semester is almost over that will direct you to continue your commitment to healthy living. This paper must be typed and thoughtful to receive credit. It will be due April 18.
Mid-Term – There will be a mid-term exam on Monday March 5th. You must pass the mid-term with a 70% or higher to receive credit for the exam. Failing the exam or failing to show up to take the exam will result in a non-passing grade for the class.
* A passing grade on attendance, the reflection paper and the mid-term are all required to pass the class.
General Recommendations:
| Start slow and gradually increase your intensity/duration of exercise. | |
| Stretching and warming up are important and should be included in your training program. | |
| Training logs should be used and brought to each class/workout session. | |
| If you are trying to decrease body fat, remember to be patient. It takes time and you must expend more calories than you consume. | |
| Drink plenty of water and eat a well-balanced diet. |
Safety:
| Dress appropriately. This includes proper shoes and clothing (no sandals, jean shorts, etc.). | |
| It is your responsibility to know and follow all weight room procedures. | |
| Notify your instructor immediately if an injury occurs or you are feeling ill. | |
| Notify your instructor immediately if a piece of equipment is broken or not operating properly. | |
