Soccer Field - Short-sided (AYSO)

While children often play on a standard-size field, many soccer organizations operate programs that feature short-sided games - a type of play emphasizing fairness, fun, and positive character building. Short-sided games; require different field dimensions and markings. Here are three field designs -suggested by American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), organized by age:

RECOMMENDED AREA: Ground space is 4,500 to 12,000 square feet minimum.

SIZE AND DIMENSION:

TEAMS OF 4 1/2 - 5 YEAR OLDS WITH 3-5 PLAYERS

bulletgoals: maximurn 5 feet high x 10 feet wide
bulletgoal area 3 yards from each goal post, 3 yards into the field of play

TEAMS OF 5-7 YEAR OLDS WITH 7 PLAYERS
bulletfield of play: 50 - 70 yards long x 30 - 50 yards wide
bulletcenter circle:  6 yard radius
bullet4 corner arcs: 2 foot radius
bulletgoals: rnaximurn 5 feet high x 12 feet wide
bulletgoal area:  6 yards from each goal post, 6 yards into the field of play

TEAMS OF 8-9 YEAR OLDS  WITH 9 PLAYERS
bulletfield of play: 70 - 80 yards long x 40 - 50 yards wide
bulletcenter circle:  8 yard radius
bullet4 corner arcs: 1 foot radius
bulletgoals: rnaximurn 7 feet high x 7 feet wide
bulletgoal area:  6 yards from each goal post, 6 yards into the field of play

*all playing fields should have a 9' restraining line outside the playing field, paralle to the touch lines.

ORIENTATION: Preferred orientation is for the long axis to be north-south.

SURFACE AND DRAINAGE: To provide better drainage, build a crown into the field. Designs should provide grades of no more than 6"-8" from the center of field to the sidelines.
