Site Visitation Assignments

Facility Types:

Each WEB student is required to visit two different types of facilities. 

Your visitation report should be via email charles.hammersley@nau.edu

You may only select one facility from each category. Select two facility types for your visitation from the following:

One indoor facility;

bullet

One outdoor facility or park/area; and

bullet

One specialized facility (ice rink, golf course, equestrian arena, rifle/archery range, marina or aquatics complex. The facility type must be selected from the following list:

INDOOR FACILITY EVALUATION FORMAT

Using an OUTLINE format, PLEASE RESPOND TO ALL ITEMS LISTED BELOW.

I. General Information

  1. Name and address of facility:
  2. Name of Agency that manages the facility:
  3. Name and phone number of the facility manager:
  4. Date facility was constructed:
  5. Total indoor area of the facility (square footage):
  6. Total outside acreage of the facility:
  7. How was the facility financed?

II. Site Selection

  1. Topography and drainage: Describe the immediate topography surrounding the facility (level, sloping, etc).
  2. Prevailing winds and natural barriers: Identify the prevailing wind direction and how drainage is diverted.
  3. Original Building, Renovated (date) or added on:
  4. User access (pedestrians, cycles and cars): Describe the location of roads, sidewalks, mass transit, bike paths etc.
  5. Accessibility for special needs users: How have the facilities been built/modified to meet the needs of those with special needs? wheel chair ramps, water fountains, bathrooms, signage, hand rails etc.
  6. Parking: Identify the total number of parking spaces and bike racks available.

III. Traffic Circulation

  1. Congested areas: Identify any areas where participants will be crowded.
  2. Relationships to other areas (flow): Describe how the areas relate with each other and the flow of pedestrian traffic within the facility.

IV. Surfacing Materials

  1. Floors: List the specific types of flooring used in different areas of the facility.
  2. Walls & Ceilings: List the types of materials used in the walls and ceilings of the facility.

V. Acoustics: Identify any acoustical materials used to reduce the amount of noise in the facility.

VI. Illumination

  1. Lighting: Identify the specific types (metal halide, low-pressure sodium etc.) of lights used matched with their location and evaluate the adequacy of the lighting used in the facility.
  2. Windows: Identify the location and adequacy of the windows in the facility.

VII. Climate Control

  1. Heating and Air Conditioning Types: Identify the specific types and size of heating and air conditioning units.

VIII. Electrical Systems

  1. Fire & Smoke Alarms: describe the type and location of any fire and smoke alarms.
  2. Security System: Identify is there is any security system used and any information about its type.

IX. Additional Information: Include any additional information that is unique to this facility.

X. Summary: Develop a summary of the facility. How it meets current demands and any deficiencies that you have identified.

XI. References: Cite all references and contacts used to complete your report. Use the APA format.

Grading:  5 points per question (excluding questions I a-c)

OUTDOOR FACILITY EVALUATION FORMAT

Using an OUTLINE format, PLEASE RESPOND TO ALL ITEMS LISTED BELOW.

I. General Information

  4. Date park/area was constructed:
  5. Total acreage of the park/area:
  6. Total camp spaces (tents/RV/handicapped):
  7. How was the park/area financed?

II. Site Selection

  1. Topography: Describe the park/area topography (level, sloping, hilly, etc).
  2. Prevailing winds and natural barriers: Identify the prevailing wind direction and any natural barriers (trees, hills, dells)
  3. Hydrology: Identify the presence of surface and/or subsurface water and the drainage pattern of any water present..
  4. Annual climate: Describe the monthly precipitation, temperature hi/low.
  5. User access (pedestrians, cycles and cars): Describe the location of roads, sidewalks, mass transit, bike paths etc.
  6. Accessibility for special needs users: How have the facilities been built/modified to meet the needs of those with special needs? wheel chair ramps, water fountains, bathrooms, signage, hand rails etc.
  7. Orientation: Describe the orientation of activity areas with respect to sun and wind direction. Be sure to identify the concerns for participants and also for spectators.
  8. Environmental Concerns: Identify the proximity of the park/area to outside sound/sights/air quality etc.
  9. Vandalism: Describe any problems with vandalism listing the types (tagging, breakage, theft etc) and frequency.

III. Support Facilities

  1. Bathrooms: describe the total number of bathrooms and the types of bathrooms used (flush, portable, pit/vault).
  2. Maintenance Buildings: Identify the size and type of support building for maintenance.
  3. Concessions: Identify the type and size of any concessions buildings and the services offered from them.
  4. Interpretive: Describe the location and type of any educational/interpretive buildings, kiosks, amphitheaters or visitor centers.
  5. Entrance or Gate: Identify the location and size of any Entrance station or Gatehouse.

IV. Traffic Circulation

  1. Congested areas: Identify any areas where participants will be crowded.
  2. Traffic Control: Identify the width, clearance/height and location of any roadways, sidewalks, bike/horse paths, ATV paths and the flow of pedestrian traffic within the park/area.

V. Control Systems

  1. Surface: Describe the materials used to construct any roadways, sidewalks, bike/horse paths, ATV paths.
  2. Signage: Identify the location and types of signage used and the materials used to construct the signs.
  3. Lighting: Identify the specific types (low-pressure sodium, metal halide etc.) and locations of all lighting used in the park/area.
  4. Barriers: Identify the types, locations and materials used to construct any travel (car, pedestrian, bike, horse etc) barrier used in the park/area.
  5. Fencing: Identify the types, location and materials used to construct any fencing used in the park/area.
  6. Utilities: Describe the types of utilities (electrical, water, sanitation, drainage, communications present in the park/area.

VI. Environmental

  1. Soils/Rock: Identify the dominate soil/rock type and any secondary soil types present in the park/area.
  2. Turf: Identify the dominate turf's present in the park/area.
  3. Trees/Shrubs: Identify the dominate types of trees and shrubs within the park/area.
  4. Animal Inventory; Identify the animal and bird species which live within the park/area. Also list any concerns relating to the animals habitat or behavior which may impact the park operation.

VII. Maintenance: Describe the routine maintenance performed in the park/area (mowing, surfacing, painting, pruning etc)

VIII. Additional Information: Include any additional information that is unique to this facility.

IX. Summary: Develop a summary of the facility. How it meets current demands and any deficiencies that you have identified.

X. References: Cite all references and contacts used to complete your report. Use the APA format.

Grading: 3 points per question (excluding questions I a-c)
