HOW TO CREATE AN E-MAIL ATTACHMENT
 | Create your paper in MicrosoftWord as you would normally do. |
 | Save the document as a .doc or .rtf file., to your hard drive ( drive "C" usually in
"my documents") or to a disk (usually your A drive, 3 1/2 floppy
or CD drive). |
 | Open your e-mail program. |
 | Create a new message to your Instructor (charles.hammersley@nau.edu
|
 | Somewhere in your e-mail program is "Attach file to new message"
or something like it. Different e-mail programs use different wording. |
 | Click on the attach command. |
 | A box will appear and ask for the file name. You can select it from drive
"C" , my documents, or the "A" drive if you saved your
paper to that drive, or where ever you saved the file. |
 | That's all there is to it. The paper is now attached to the e-mail so just
hit the Send button. |

Assignment 1 - Due Monday, September 22
Literature Review: (3-4 pages, not counting the title/cover
page). The student will identify a current trend in
Ecotourism and develop a literature review. Select at least five current articles
(dated between 1998 and now) addressing the trend. Write a brief summary of each article,
and then develop a comprehensive summary relating how the information from the individual
articles describe the Ecotourism trend. Be sure to include a complete reference list in
your paper in the APA style. This assignment
is also to show you how to write in the APA format. Please pay close attention
to the APA guidelines.

Assignment 2 - Due Monday, October 20
Individual Ecotourism Project: Students get the opportunity to plan
an ecotour to a non-western country (NOTE:
YOU MAY NOT USE NORTH AMERICA, JAPAN, NEW ZEALAND, RUSSIA, AUSTRALIA OR
ANY EUROPEAN COUNTRY). This is an escorted ecotour not a Free
Independent Traveler (FIT) trip. Your project must include the following sections. Include
specific and complete information in each section.
Provide specific information
on:
 | Flight/transportation schedules/times/dates (include name of the
airline, ferry, bus etc. and flight numbers); |
 | Names and types of transportation; |
 | Names of lodging providers and eating establishments; |
 | Names of companies providing interpretive/educational activities; and |
 | Names of all attractions. |
*NOTE: You must use existing travel and hospitality businesses and
attractions.
For ALL PRM
majors, this assignment should be saved and placed in your PRM Professional
Portfolio.
Please be sure to use the correct format which is provided
in the assignment. Develop this ecotour as if you are the tour operator. The
important items are:

Section 1 How does your tour "qualify" as an ecotour? Be sure to identify the reasons
why your tour qualifies as an ecotour based on Weaver's (2001) definition:
"Ecotourism is a form of tourism that
fosters learning experiences and appreciation of the natural environment, or
some component thereof, within its associated cultural context. It has the
appearance (in concert with best practice) of being environmentally and
socio-culturally sustainable, preferably in a way that enhances the natural and
cultural resource base of the destination and promotes the viability of the
operation" (Weaver, 2001, p.15).(10 pts)

Section 2 Ecotour trip itinerary (minimum of 6 nights and seven days,
including travel time) You must provide specific information on the modes of
travel (names of the local service providers/companies used) and schedules (from existing
transportation providers or your own van). Also, the names of all lodging
providers, land management agencies and all eco-attractions. (30 points)

Ecotour Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Depart Phoenix
Sky Harbor Airport November 11, 2007 at 9:10am on American Airlines flight
#1770 and arrive at Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) Airport at 12:25pm. Depart DFW
at 1:05pm, arriving in Belize City at 3:55pm on flight #2193. Travel time
for both flights, including the layover is 8 hours, 10 minutes. Tour members
will be greeted at the gate by Journeys International staff, who transport
the group to Pook’s Hill Lodge, a rainforest lodge located on a 300 acre
private reserve. Arrival will be at 6:30 PM when a light snack will be
served before taking a short sunset bird watching hike and enjoying a late
buffet dinner at 8:00PM at the lodge.
Day 2: Breakfast is
served at 7:00 AM in the lodge, at 9:00 AM a Journey's International tour
guide will drive the group about two hours farther into the rainforest to
Caracol, an ancient Maya site covering 35 square miles where archaeologists
believe over 100,000 people lived around 300 A.D. and which “was one of the
largest ancient Maya cities” (caracol, nd, para
3). The tour will be include a local guide and interpretive
program. A sack lunch at 12:30 PM provided by the lodge, the guided walking
tour will end at 3:00 PM when the group will then be driven back to the
lodge for a 6:30 PM dinner.

Section 3 Ecotour marketing plan (must include a market profile;
geographic location, age, gender, education, occupation. See Chapter
Two of the text) This information should be taken directly from your text. It
is important to know the market profile for an ecotourist. Also, include how
you would publicize your ecotour. (20 points)

Section 4 Ecotour interpretive/educational program (minimum of one program
per day and at least 4 programs) You may use existing interpretive/educational
programs or develop your own. A brief title and description for each program
should be included in this section. (30 points) Example:
Interpretive and Educational Programs
Day one, a Sabah photographic
book will be provided by Borneo Eco Tours.
Day two, a Kota Kinabalu
Highlights cultural city tour will be conducted by Borneo Eco Tours.
Day three, an educational Gaya Island
Rainforest Walking tour will be conducted by Borneo Eco Tours.
Day four, a wildlife tour will be
provided by Borneo Eco Tours and a video show will be presented by the
Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre.
Day five, a slide show by a natural guide
and an educational program about reforestation on the Kinabatangan Wildlife
Corridor Regeneration Program will be provided by the Sukau Rainforest
Lodge.
Day six, a slide show will be available
at the Education Centre within Kinabalu Park.
Day seven, a historical tour of the
Kundasang Memorial Park will be conducted by Borneo Eco Tours.

Assignment 3 - Due Monday, November 24
Tourism Case Study : Select a country (other than the United
States) and complete the following information.
Hint: Developed countries have better
web sites and more information to answer the following questions. If you picked
a country and cannot get the required information, then change to a new country
that can provide the necessary information. (NOTE:
YOU MAY NOT USE THE UNITED STATES OR CANADA). USE AN
OUTLINE FORMAT FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT. Answer the following items.
 | Name of the country |
 | Identify total yearly tourists. |
 | Estimated revenue from tourism. |
 | Estimated number of people employed in tourism industries in that country. |
 | Identify and briefly describe three popular tourism destinations in the country and the primary activities
of each. Example: British Columbia is NOT an acceptable tourism destination,
but Whistler Ski Resort in British Columbia is an acceptable destination. |
 | Identify the current monetary exchange rate. |
 | Identify what travel documentation is required to enter your chosen country. |
 | Identify and briefly describe three (local) commercial travel providers
(in-country) for the tourism destinations you selected. |
 | Discuss any problems associated with tourism at your selected destinations. |
 | A complete reference list using the APA style. |
