Environmental Education & Outdoor Living Skills Director Job Description 

Minimum Qualifications
bulletTraining and experience in environmental education and outdoor living skill activities (must be documented); ACA Outdoor Living Skills (OLS) training preferred
bulletCurrent first aid and CPR certifications
bulletAbility to set up demonstration area and program, and to teach skills to staff and campers of all ages
bulletAbility to supervise assistants and make scheduling assignments
bulletDesire and ability to work with children outdoors
bulletAbility to relate to one's peer group
bulletAbility to accept guidance and supervision
bulletGood character, integrity, and adaptability
bulletEnthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
bulletCollege student or at least 19 years of age

Camp Goals
This job description should include specific responsibilities that reflect the goals of the camp and the goals of camper development. 

General Responsibilities
To plan, direct, and supervise camp's environmental education and outdoor living skills program.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Set up nature center and outdoor skills area(s) during staff training.
  2. Teach staff their responsibilities in activity during staff training.
  3. Teach and monitor proper use of equipment.
  4. Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory , and store equipment for safety.
  5. Check equipment and make (or file for) repairs.
  6. Conduct daily check of program area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  7. Write (with help of activity assistants) lesson plans that will foster participants' outdoor living skills and environmental sensitivity. Check all lesson plans.
  8. Keep records on all participants; help them progress from beginner to advanced levels.
  9. Work with overnight camping director and head counselors.
  10. Plan trips based on campers' skills.
  11. Plan cabin cookouts with head counselors.
  12. Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials.
  13. Assist in packing all materials and supplies at end of season.
  14. Evaluate current seasons and make recommendations for equipment, supplies, and program for following season.
  15. These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.
